Fragments

From Waste to Original Gemstones

about

BOMMA’s first series of lighting collection made from Fragmentglass, presents a new perspective on glass waste shards transformed into the original gemstones.

BOMMA’s lighting undergoes strict quality control. Pieces with imperfections inevitably end up as glass shards, despite the many hours glassmakers spent creating them. But glass is a recyclable material and can be remelted for further use. Inspired by this process, designers from the DECHEM Studio created Fragmentglass, a new material that upcycles glass shards and breathes new life into them.

The new lighting carries BOMMA’s signature combination of innovation,
craft, technology and distinctive design. The shapes resemble gemstones created
under pressure to reveal inner beauty.

BOMMA offers Fragments lighting in two sizes — short and long
— and in three colours: black, white and Flamingo Mint. The elegant,
minimalist fittings for the lighting are available in brushed
gold or anthracite finishes.

As with the BOMMA Constellations product line, this collection allows
for
creative groupings of individual lighting elements to suit the needs
of the space.

Each Fragmentglass panel is carefully assembled by stacking glass shards into a melting mold. The resulting structure is quite unpredictable as the melting process itself cannot be controlled. Each piece is first cut from the Fragmentglass panel and then meticulously hand-cut by the master glass cutter.

The designers carefully curated a color palette for the new Fragmentglass material, allowing only certain ratios of colored shards to achieve the desired effect. The resulting Fragmentglass was created in three color variations – mysterious Black, stormy white-gray White, and delicate Flamingo Mint.

DECHEM Studio

DECHEM Studio was established in Prague in 2012 by Michaela Tomiskova and Jakub Jandourek. They first met at the Novy Bor School of Glass, where they both fell in love with the earliest synthesised material in human history. While Michaela went on to study product design at AAAD Prague (Academy of Arts Prague) and later worked for several acclaimed design studios, Jakub continued to hone his skills in the lighting industry, specialising in glass workmanship, technology, and manufacturing. Since establishing DECHEM Studio they have focused on product design and maintained a special attention to glass.
